Accessibility conformance report
Scratchpaper is made for students in grades 6–12, including students who use screen readers, keyboards, switch devices, magnification, or who read more slowly. This page says what we conform to, how we checked, what we know does not conform yet, and how to tell us when something does not work for you.
Summary. Scratchpaper conforms to WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the study app and its public pages, with the exceptions listed under Known limitations. The report is self-authored by the people who build the product; it has not yet been reviewed by an independent auditor. Districts that require a third-party report should say so — it is on our list.
Scope and method
- What was evaluated: every screen of the app at
/app/(home, class and unit lists, study options, flashcards, quiz, summary, study plan, deck editor, tutor, homework walkthrough including the revealed answer, sign-in and parent-consent screens) and the public pages (home, teachers, privacy, terms, this page). - Automated: axe-core 4.10 against WCAG 2.0/2.1/2.2 A and AA rules and best
practices, on every screen state, at a phone width of 375 px and at 320 px (the width of a 640 px
window at 200% zoom). Run again on every release from
tools/a11y_sweep.py. - Manual and scripted: keyboard reach of every control and a visible focus ring; touch-target size on every interactive element; reflow with no horizontal scrolling at 320 px; heading structure and landmarks; form labels; live regions for streamed content; reduced-motion preference; colour contrast of text and controls; the answer-reveal and practice flows with a screen reader's reading order.
- Browsers: Chrome and Safari on phones (iOS and Android), Chrome on ChromeOS, Chrome, Edge and Safari on laptops.
Conformance, by guideline
| Criterion | Level | Status | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.1.1 Non-text content | A | Supports | Icons carry text or an accessible name; decorative emoji are inside labelled controls; worksheet photos a student uploads are their own content and are described by the walkthrough's opening line. |
| 1.2.1–1.2.5 Time-based media | A/AA | Partially supports | Concept videos are embedded from YouTube; captions depend on the video's publisher. Nothing in Scratchpaper itself is audio or video. |
| 1.3.1 Info and relationships | A | Supports | Headings, lists, landmarks, labelled fields, tables where used. |
| 1.3.2 Meaningful sequence | A | Supports | |
| 1.3.3 Sensory characteristics | A | Supports | |
| 1.3.4 Orientation | AA | Supports | Both orientations. |
| 1.3.5 Identify input purpose | AA | Supports | Email, one-time code and birth-year fields carry autocomplete purposes. |
| 1.4.1 Use of colour | A | Supports | Quiz results and plan progress use text and shape as well as colour. |
| 1.4.2 Audio control | A | Supports | Read-aloud starts only on request and has a stop control. |
| 1.4.3 Contrast (minimum) | AA | Supports | Text at 4.5:1 or better; large text at 3:1. The footer note, the green badge and the public pages' faint text were below this before October 2, 2026 and were corrected. |
| 1.4.4 Resize text | AA | Supports | Relative units throughout; a reading mode offers 18 px type and shorter lines. |
| 1.4.5 Images of text | AA | Supports | |
| 1.4.10 Reflow | AA | Supports | No horizontal scrolling at 320 px. The navigation overflowed at that width before October 2, 2026 and was corrected. |
| 1.4.11 Non-text contrast | AA | Supports | Controls and focus rings at 3:1 or better. |
| 1.4.12 Text spacing | AA | Supports | |
| 1.4.13 Content on hover or focus | AA | Supports | No hover-only content. |
| 2.1.1 Keyboard · 2.1.2 No keyboard trap | A | Supports | Every control is a native button, link or field. Modals return focus. |
| 2.1.4 Character key shortcuts | A | Supports | None. |
| 2.2.1 Timing adjustable · 2.2.2 Pause, stop, hide | A | Supports | No time limits on study; a sign-in code lasts 10 minutes and can be re-sent. |
| 2.3.1 Three flashes | A | Supports | |
| 2.4.1 Bypass blocks | A | Supports | Landmarks on every page; the app's main region is focusable. |
| 2.4.2 Page titled | A | Supports | The app updates its title per screen. |
| 2.4.3 Focus order · 2.4.4 Link purpose | A | Supports | |
| 2.4.5 Multiple ways | AA | Supports | Navigation, home doors, and a search of the course list. |
| 2.4.6 Headings and labels | AA | Supports | Every screen has one h1 and a heading order without skips (three screens lacked an h1 and three skipped a level before October 2, 2026). |
| 2.4.7 Focus visible | AA | Supports | A 2 px ring on keyboard focus throughout, including the public pages. |
| 2.5.1 Pointer gestures · 2.5.2 Pointer cancellation | A | Supports | Flashcards flip on tap or keyboard; no path-based gestures. |
| 2.5.3 Label in name | A | Supports | |
| 2.5.4 Motion actuation | A | Supports | None. |
| 2.5.8 Target size (minimum) (WCAG 2.2) | AA | Supports | Interactive targets are at least 24×24 CSS px; on touch screens, at least 44×44 for all primary controls. |
| 3.1.1 Language of page | A | Supports | lang="en". |
| 3.1.2 Language of parts | AA | Partially supports | Language-course content (Spanish, Mandarin and others) is not yet marked with its language, so a screen reader may pronounce it with English rules. |

| 4.1.1 Parsing | A | Supports | |
| 4.1.2 Name, role, value | A | Supports | Native elements; toggles expose aria-pressed; streamed regions expose aria-busy. |
| 4.1.3 Status messages | AA | Supports | A polite live region announces when a walkthrough is ready, a card is saved, or a code is sent. |
Known limitations
- Videos. Concept videos come from YouTube. Whether a given video has accurate captions depends on its publisher. The walkthrough and the practice problem never depend on the video.
- Language courses. Content in Spanish, Mandarin and other languages is not yet tagged with its language for screen readers.
- Mathematics read aloud. Read-aloud uses the device's own voice. Expressions are written in plain characters (
3x + 7 = 22,x²,√16) rather than images, and most voices read them well; some pronounce symbols inconsistently. - Third-party review. This report is self-authored. An independent audit is planned.
